Discover The Surat Basin
Chinchilla
Chinchilla in south west Queensland is ideally situated in the middle of the Surat Basin, a coal-rich area that stretches from Toowoomba to beyond Roma and for the past three years has seen major growth and development because of exploration for coal and gas, the development of coal seam gas, underground coal gasification, and the establishment of new power stations. The Kogan Creek Power Project, a 750 megawatt coal fired power station and adjacent coal mine is situated near Chinchilla.
Chinchilla is a picturesque, friendly town now experiencing a boom as a result of resources exploration, energy and infrastructure projects within the Surat Basin.
Agriculture is the mainstay of the community, with beef and pork production, wool growing, and horticulture traditionally underwriting the local economy. House prices in Chinchilla have boomed as a result of the resources exploration.
